'Crisis in Chemicals: The threat posed by the 'Biomedical Revolution' to the profits, liabilities, and regulation of industries
making and using chemicals' is a detailed examination of the way in which the Human Genome Project and the 'Biomedical
Revolution' will impact on our understanding of the health impacts of chemicals. It has been written for a general audience, and
covers a wide range of issues, including:

• What the 'Biomedical Revolution' is all about, and how, over the next decade, it will improve our understanding of how our bodies work.
• The way in which these advances will make it easier to measure the harmful effects of chemicals, and will lead to the identification of particularly susceptible groups of the population.
• A review of what is already known about genetic susceptibility to harm from chemicals (this section is more technical)
• An examination of the deficiencies in the current system regulating chemicals use (focusing on European regulation, but relevant to other systems), and how the biomedical revolution will further reduce public confidence in regulation.
• An outline of the impacts this improved knowledge will have on industries that make, use or sell products containing chemicals, as it becomes easier to demonstrate liability, and as more chemicals are identified as having health impacts.
• An examination of improvements that can be made in the regulation and use of chemicals in order to create an open and precautionary system, better able to cope with the advances in science.
